Norma Nowak

"My life works in Buffalo Niagara as a parent and a scientist. Buffalo Public Schools, Canisius College and the University at Buffalo provided me with an outstanding education. This led me to play a key role in the ground-breaking Human Genome Project with a rewarding career in cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. I raised two wonderful sons who benefited from the strong sense of family and community in Buffalo, and from the rich variety of regional outdoor activities."
— Norma J. Nowak, PhD, Director, DNA Microarray and Genomics Facility, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Director of Science & Technology, NYS Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences, Associate Professor, Biochemistry, University at Buffalo

As a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB), where I received my Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology, I can't imagine growing my career anywhere else. I am proud to be a contributing member of Buffalo Niagara's vibrant life sciences community.

My education afforded me the opportunity to contribute to the Human Genome Project, as well as to microarray-based approaches to understanding heritable disorders and cancer. Since, 2003, I have served as Director of Science and Technology for the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences.

I continue to serve as Director of the Microarray and Genomics Facility, a collaborative research lab shared by Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, headquartered at RPCI. I also spent 14 years in research at RPCI developing physical clone resources for cloning disease genes and mapping the human genome.

I was privledged to receive more than $4 million in research grants from the National Institutes of Health and various foundations, and author or co-author 80 research articles in leading scientific journals and has served as an associate editor of Physiological Genomics. Additionally, I am pleased to sit on the editorial board of Cytogenetics and Genome Research as an Associate Editor.

UB Today Fall 2006 article featuring Norma Nowak

I have a rewarding career in Buffalo Niagara, but what really makes my life work here, is the strong sense of community. As a widow, I was able to raise two wonderful sons who benefited from the stong sense of family that the Buffalo Niagara community offers. That, paired with the richness the region offers, from great winter sports to outstanding fishing and boating in the summer, what more could you want?
