Natascha Thomas has been named director of the company’s “Buffalo Development Center,” charged with building out a software development hub. Buffalo was chosen earlier this year to be among 10 hubs across the U.S. after Rural Sourcing’s internal site search identified Western New York. Invest Buffalo Niagara worked with the company to secure their arrival.

“We hope the Canadians miss us,” Mr. Kucharski said. “We certainly miss them.”

When you think of Buffalo, N.Y., things that come to mind could include lost Super Bowls, snow and, of course, chicken wings. But the real news coming out of Buffalo is renewable energy. For more than a century, the Western New York city has been a leader in clean energy.

In some ways, it was a standard visit for a company considering the region for a site location, Hubacher said. But because the Rural Sourcing team came in with a clearly defined set of priorities, they were treated to a customized itinerary that could become a template going forward.

Rural Sourcing, Inc. – a leader in onshore digital engineering – will establish a software development center downtown, creating 150 new jobs within three years. The jobs will be filled by local applicants, with a recruitment effort in the city’s refugee community, and pay an average salary of $80,000.

Invest Buffalo Niagara promoted the region’s workforce availability, education system and investments in technology development, Hubacher said. The organization also highlighted investments designed to make the city’s downtown a more attractive place to recruit and retain tech talent, he said.

Tom Kucharski of Invest Buffalo Niagara said the return of binational traffic will allow the agency to continue assisting Canadian companies to expand into the U.S. “They’re not going to make business decisions based on our drone camera or Google Earth,” Kucharski said. “They’ve got to be here and be able to meet with folks.
